What natural stone actually does
Natural stone is more porous than an engineered surface, particularly with acidic products like lemon or vinegar. If those sit on the surface for some time there will be etching, the sheen changes in that one spot.
With everyday use a patina happens. The beauty of marble and natural stone is that it ages well: over time the spots and marks blend together and stop being noticeable. If you are looking for a flawless, unchanging countertop, this is worth knowing before you choose.
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that began as sandstone. It looks very like marble but contains no calcite, meaning it will not etch, which is why it has become a favourite with homeowners, architects and interior designers alike.
No two slabs are the same
Drag to compare two slabs of the same stone. This is precisely why natural stone is chosen in person rather than from a sample chip.
